“Kia ora and hello everyone.

The Prime Minister’s Space Prizes celebrate the innovative, talented people in our space and emerging aviation sectors. As New Zealand’s first Minister for Space, I know that there are many. Our researchers and companies are using disruptive technologies to tackle some of the planet’s big challenges and create existing opportunities for economic growth.

This [prize] will showcase the high-calibre individuals who are already working in and contributing to the success of this exciting sector. These outstanding achievements will be recognised by an award for professionals which carries a $100,000 prize. It is crucial to celebrate the people who are making an impact now and to inspire the next generation, I want our young people to aim high and I know you agree. Encouraging their interest in space and emerging aviation will help us grow the talented workforce needed for our sector to thrive in future. The prize for young people is aimed at students in Years 12 and 13 and the winner will receive $50,000 towards their tertiary education. This first year they will also get to visit Rocket Labs facilities, both in New Zealand and in the United States, so if you know a student who has taken part in a space-related project or research consider nominating them for the prize for young people and if you know someone making an outstanding contribution to their field, whether in a private company or research institute, nominate them for the inaugural Prime Minister’s Space Prize.

Let’s celebrate and share the amazing things happening in space and emerging aviation right here in New Zealand.”
